The Chicago Bears followed up the draft weekend with their rookie mini camp, and after three days of practice and evaluation the Bears decided to sign six new free agent players. The latest additions are Andrew Shanle, safety from Nebraska, cornerbacks Troy Collins(Grambling) and Tim Mixon(California), running back Josh Allen(Maryland), tight end Fontel Mines(Virginia) and defensive tackle Tory Collins(Northwestern State).
Along with the latest additions is another undrafted free agent, Florida quarterback Chris Leak. As Grossmans' replacement following the 2003 draft, Leak rewrote the record book, led his team to a National Championship and ended his college career as the Gators' all-time leader in pass attempts (1,458), completions (895), passing yards (11,213), total offense (11,350) and 200-yard passing games (33). Despite not being drafted, mainly due to his size, Leak seems quite content with his situation. "There's going to be criticism," Leak remarked. "It's the NFL and you'll have that. That's part of the business. But this is a big step. I'm going to a team that went to the Super Bowl. I'm happy to be a Bear." Even though Rex is still our quarterback, the reports from this summers training camp should be very entertaining as Leak looks for a spot on the Bears roster.
We wish good luck and good health to all the rookies, drafted or otherwise, during their quest to make the Bears 2007 roster. Stay out of trouble and we'll see you in Bourbonnais!
Congratulations is in order for Bears former defensive tackle and native Chicagoan Chris Zorich(1991-97) and one time Chicago QB Doug Flutie(1986), as both were elected to the College Football Hall of Fame. Flutie won the Heisman Trophy in 1984 while playing for Boston College and is most famous for the "hail mary" TD pass caught by Gerard Phelan just as time ran out in the fourth quarter, beating Miami 47-45. Every time you see a program related to the "greatest" moments in football history you're sure to see this one. Chris Zorich, a member of the 1998 National Champion Fighting Irish, and team captain during his senior year, received many honors as a member of the Notre Dame family. He was a two-time All-American and College Defensive Player of the Year in 1989 and was selected to the College Football All-Century Team in 2000. Flutie and Zorich will be inducted at the National Football Foundation's awards banquet this December and enshrined in the Hall of Fame next summer in South Bend Indiana.
